How to prevent warping in clay
As clay dries, depending on the shape and how you have manipulated it, it will tend to warp. This is especially frustrating if you are trying to make perfectly round vessels, like mugs or cups.
Often the warping will be visible only once the piece is dry, which means that we need to work to prevent warping at the wet stage.
So how do we prevent it? Read below!
At the very end, before you leave your piece to dry, gently press a perfectly round shape (like a paper cup) in the opening of your vessel. You want to wiggle it or turn it for better results. Remove it from the piece. Do not leave it to dry with your shape - in some cases it may cause cracks as the clay dries and shrinks.
