How to sand bisqued pottery pieces safely

We sometimes sand our pieces to remove any sharp bits of clay or rough edges before glazing. This will help give your pieces a smooth finish and better end result.

We always wet sand our pieces in the studio to prevent excess dust in the atmosphere and keep the space as safe as possible. We also recommend wearing a mask or doing it outside.

Here are a few steps for sanding your pieces:

  1. You will need a bowl with water, your bisqued pieces and either sand paper or a foam sanding pad.
  2. Take your piece and dip the area you want to sand in water. Then sand the area, whilst holding the piece over the bowl.
  3. Keep going, sanding any areas that feel sharp or rough.
  4. Now your piece is sanded! Use a damp sponge to remove any excess dust and allow the piece to dry before glazing.
